About Me.
Bio
Madison-based mixed media artist, Sophia Maahs, has spent the past year pursuing sculptural depth within her practice. She particularly enjoys the unique dynamic she’s created by pairing neon with fiber art, but she works in a variety of other mediums including printmaking, painting, and collage. Sophia uses her work to explore a range of topics including music, family history, and personal health. Her work is consistently playing with the juxtaposition of dark themes and playful undertones, so you can always find a bit of humor if you look in the right place.

Artist Statement
As a multi-media artist, I use a variety of materials including neon, fibers, prints, and paintings to touch on a range of themes. Much of my art practice manifests itself as a representation of my ADHD– mixed media reflects my constant desire to try new things, and the seemingly broad range of subjects within my work is a projection of my hyper-fixations. The work is often bold and expressive in its color, text, and imagery, and the highly laborious mediums I choose to use relieve the need for stimming. I’m learning to love the part of my brain I used to feel most ashamed of, and it has now become the driving force behind my art.
